VARIETY SERIES
Variety is a series of are early works that explores biodiversity in the Southern Appalachian mountains. The first few paintings in the series look specifically at the Southern Appalachian meadows, swamps and bogs and their inhabitants. Almost one fifth of the 722 monitored rare plant species in North Carolina occur in these areas, some of them exist in these areas exclusively. Meadows, swamps and bogs in Southern Appalachia are often destroyed at an accelerated rate for buildings, highways, recreation, as well as for industrial and agricultural use. Many species of plants and animals in these habitats are further impacted by pesticides, climate changes, and invasive species.
The works you see here feature endangered species and habitats and through mark making explores how human intervention may be disrupting the delicate inter-connectivity between species.
“The interdependence among organisms and their environments sustains the conditions needed for survival by all living creatures. Every day, biodiversity provides us with food, water, medicine, oxygen, energy, detoxification of waste, stabilization of the climate, recreation and tourism, and many other essential products and services. -ArtWorksForChange
